    General Information

    Everyone knows what the Olympic games are. Every four years in summer and two years in winter the best country’s sportsmen and sportswomen meet there. However, the Olympic Games have changed greatly from the days when they began.

    The first Olympic Games

    When the Olympic Games began they were first held in the Greek city of Olympia every four years. These games were held and allowed all free Greek men to compete. Women were prohibited from competing in the Olympic Games.

    The first competition was held in 776 B.C. and the final competition was held in 393 A.D. after being canceled by the Christian Emperor, Theodosius I.

    The Emblem

    There are 5 Olympic Rings.They represent the five continents: (Africa, America, Asia, Australia, and Europe) and the athletes from around the world.This symbol was designed in 1912 and adopted in 1914.

    1896 Olympic Games

    were the first Olympic games since ancient times. An 1894 congress organized by Pierre de Coubertin in Paris established the International Olympic Committee and appointed Athens, Greece to be the host city. The Games were held in April, 1896. At that time, it was the largest international sporting event ever held. 14 countries, including the Unites States, participated.

    There were nine categories of events of the 1896 Olympics. They included athletics, cycling, fencing and wrestling. Other athletes competed in swimming, weightlifting, tennis and gymnastics.

    Winners of the events won medals, although first place medals were silver, second place were bronze. Winners also received an olive branch and a diploma. The third placed athlete did not receive any reward.

    Only male athletes were allowed to participate in the 1896 Olympics. Women would be first allowed to participate in the second Olympic Games in 1900 in Paris, in France.

    1896 Olympic Sportsmen

    The U.S. team was made up mostly of University students from Harvard and Princeton. The U.S. team won 11 first place medals, the most of any country. Greece won the most medals overall (46). The most successful competitor was German wrestler and gymnast Carl Schuhmann, who won four events.

    The 1896 Olympics were regarded as a great success even though there were many obstacles and setbacks. The Games had the largest international participation of any sporting event to that date. The Panathinaiko Stadium, the only Olympic stadium used in the 19th Century, overflowed with the largest crowd ever to watch a sporting event. These Games were very popular. Over 80,000 people attended the opening ceremony.

Тема. 1896 Olympic Games

Цель:

- совершенствование навыков изучающего чтения;

- создание условий для дальнейшего формирования культуры здорового образа жизни;

- расширение представлений об истории проведения Олимпийских игр.

Оборудование: компьютер, проектор, доступ к интернету.

Материалы: презентация.

Ход урока.

1) Приветствие, целеполагание (1 минута).

Our country will host the Olympic Games in Sochi in 2014. Perhaps some of us will go to watch this very important international sporting event. Do you know the history of the Olympics? (ученики отвечают)

Today we are going to read the text about the 1896 Olympic Games. After reading you’ll have the questionnaire and find out how much you know.

2) Организационный момент (2 минуты).

3) Warm-up activities (5 минут).

Vocabulary work.

Read these words, translate and fill in the table (slide 2-3)

4) Изучение нового материала (15 минут):

Let’s read and translate some facts from the ancient history of the Olympics. (slide 4-7). (reading for the main idea)

What do you know about the 1896 Olympic Games? (учащиеся отвечают)

Let’s read further and find out if you are right (slide 8-13).

5) Первичная проверка понимания (4 минуты).

We’ve read some facts about these games. Please answer my questions:

А) Today we’ve refreshed our knowledge of the history of the Olympic Games. Now I’d like you to find out how much you know about it. We are going to answer 7 questions about the Olympic Games (slide 14-21).(Можно провести викторину online на сайте www.syvum.com, выбрав тему).

Б) Проверка ответов (слайд 21). (5 минут). В качестве приза можно показать подбор фото с Олимпиады 1896 (http://www.olympic.org/athens-1896-summer-olympics) или просмотреть видео на английском языке с открытия церемонии Олимпийских игр на http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3Uq5amGfBg (видео длится около 6 минут, но можно просмотреть выборочно).

7) Подведение итогов урока (3 минуты).
