Elbe Day
Memorial in Arlington Torgau memorial On April 25, 1945 Soviet and American troops met at the River Elbe, near Torgau in Germany. This contact between the Soviets advancing from the East, and the Americans, advancing from the West, meant that the two powers had effectively cut Germany in two. In 1961 the popular Russian song “Do the Russians Want War?” evoked the memory of American and Russian soldiers embracing at the Elbe River. O, do the Russians long for war?Ask of the stillness evermore,Ask of the field, or ask the breeze,And ask the birch and poplar trees.Ask of the soldiers who now lieBeneath the birch trees and the sky, And let their sons tell you once moreWhether the Russians longWhether the Russians longWhether the Russians long for war. Not only at their country's callDid Russian soldiers fight and fall; They died that men from ev'ry shoreMight live without the fear of war.Ask those who fought, and those erased,Ask those who at the Elbe you embraced. These monuments are only forTo show if Russians longTo show if Russians longTo show if Russians long for war.
