Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September. That is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers.

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City.

In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday. In 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

In 1894, the US Congress made Labor Day a federal holiday. After that, all 50 states made Labor Day an official holiday.

The form of celebrating Labor Day was proposed as a street parade, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families.

Over time, the "trade-union" nature of the holiday almost lost it's true meaning. Now Americans traditionally celebrate Labor Day as a symbolic end of the summer season, and for students of most colleges and some schools this is the beginning of a new academic year.
