Why does Russiahave a lot of things to do with red
-
Colours are all around us and they can mean or symbolise different things.Let’s take a look at … RED
-
Red is the brightest and the most popular colour in Russia. In ancient Russia the word ‘red’ had the meaning of “beautiful”. And on special days and holidays the people in old Russia put on beautiful clothes: red shirts and red dresses. There is a lot of red colour in Russian folk costumes. The famous square in Moscow was called Red Square because it was very beautiful.
-
But in the Soviet times the red colour symbolized blood of the workers. A lot of red symbols appeared during the revolution in 1917: red flags, red five-pointed stars, the Red Army, red Pioneer scarves.
-
In modern Russia the red colour is the same as in many other countries. It is the symbol of love, energy and danger. When Russian traffic lights are red, pedestrians or drivers must stop. Russian men give red roses to their sweethearts to say “I love you”.
-
The Russian flag also contains a red stripe. It is believed to denote great powerness, force and strength of our country. Whatever it may be the scarlet in our culture has always meant energy, solemnity and good humour.
-
The tradition of highlighting holidays in red also originated from the Christian idea - the church calendar. The main "red" holiday is Easter – the Resurrection, the time of the victory of life over death, a symbol of truth and God's love for people – the peak of the use of red attributes: during the church service, red candles, red and gold chasubles are used; People give each other red eggs.
