    Early Life

William Shakespeare is one of the greatest and most famous writers in the world. He was born in 1564 in Stratford-on-Avon. It was a small English town. His actual birthdate remains unknown, but is traditionally observed on 23 April, St George's Day. William was the third child of John Shakespeare, a leather merchant, and Mary Arden, a local landed heiress. William had two older sisters, Joan and Judith, and three younger brothers, Gilbert, Richard and Edmund. His father wanted his son to be an educated person and William was sent to the local grammar school, he had no free time. When he had a break William liked to go to the forest and to the river Avon.

    Shakespeare's education

  • Слайд 5

Although no attendance records for the period survive, most biographers agree that Shakespeare was probably educated at the King's New School in Stratford, a free school chartered in 1553, about a quarter-mile from his home. The Stratford grammar school had been built some two hundred years before Shakespeare was born and in that time the lessons taught there were, of course, dictated primarily by the beliefs of the reigning monarch. In 1553, due to a charter by King Edward VI, the school became known as the King's New School of Stratford-upon-Avon. During the years that Shakespeare attended the school, at least one and possibly three headmasters stepped down because of their devotion to the Catholic religion proscribed by Queen Elizabeth.

    Shakespeare's family

In November, 1582, at 18-year age, Shakespeare married Ann Hatauey, the daughter of the local land owner. Anna was eight years older than William — in a year of a marriage he was eighteen, she — twenty six. Perhaps, the marriage was compelled: in May of the following 1583 their first child — the daughter Susan was born. In 1585 — twins: son Hemnet, who dead in 11 years in August, 1596, and the daughter Judith. It’s practically no information about Shakespeare's relationship with his wife. Apparently, Anna lived in Stratford while William worked in London though he didn't leave the affairs in his hometown and probably from time to time came home. In the second half of the 1580th Shakespeare leaves Stratford. Come so-called "lost" or "dark years" of which we know practically nothing.
