His father William was a gardener of a small estate. Robert’s mother knew many old songs and ballads. In the evenings she told the children folk-tales. 4

The family was very poor, but the father wanted to give the children the best education. When the children were young, he began to teach them to read and write. 5

Robert Burns died at the age of 37. He had become Scotland's best-loved poet andthe symbol of the regeneration of a nation.
